From Birbhum's 'Poltu' to President in Rashtrapati Bhavan: Pranab Da's Illustrious Journey in Politics

In the days of pre-independent India, young Poltu from the small village of Mirati in Birbhum District of West Bengal loved playing a game of politics. A group of his friends would dress up as Indians and other group as 'Britishers' for this game, in which, the Indian side would always win. , a freedom fighter who spent more than 10 years in British jails, for Poltu, everything was political from an early age. The evening discussions at Poltu's house always revolved around politics, and he would swallow every word of Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mahatma Gandhi, even though he didn't understand them. “What is communalism, baba,” young Poltu would ask his revolutionary father. His primary school was a long walk from home and Poltu did not like walking those long miles. He would whine and complain to his mother and insist on not going to school, to which she would retort by saying, "If you do not study, what will you do?" So, he studied and although he wasn't an extraordinary student, he worked very hard, and eventually, graduated with a MA in Political Science and History, as well as an LLB degree from the University of Calcutta. Many decades later, he also held one of the highest political ranks in India and became the 13th President of the country. We have known Poltu as -- a seasoned politician, , a man of sharp wit and great scholarly acumen -- whose death we collective mourn as a nation today.........Read more

Further it also said that specific inputs in this regard were received from the Financial Intelligence Unit. Meanwhile, the CBI has found that the Advance Strategic Consultancy Pvt Ltd had allegedly received funds worth several crores from 11 firms under the guise of consultancy charges. Former Siri chief is leaving Apple to join Microsoft’s AI division

Bill Stasior, the former head of Apple’s Siri division, is leaving the company after nearly decade to join Microsoft’s artificial intelligence division, reports The Information. Although Stasior left Apple in May, he’s only joining Microsoft later this month as a corporate vice president, reporting to Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott. Stassior worked at Apple for more than seven years, joining back in 2012. Stasior’s departure seems less an indictment of the current state of Siri and more a reflection of the reality of AI at Apple. Last year, the iPhone maker poached John Giannandrea from Google, where he was a former head of search and AI. That’s reshaped the way Apple works on AI. At the time of Giannandrea’s hiring, the move was considered an admission from Apple that its current AI efforts were lackluster and needing revamping, evidenced by Siri falling far behind Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa in sophistication and industry adoption. Despite Siri living inside every iPhone and arriving on the scene before any other major voice assistant, Amazon and Google have led the race in consumer AI by incorporating their respective assistants into smart home products, a sector where Apple has lagged due to its stricter stances on user privacy and its delayed entrance to the smart speaker market. ........Read more

Chidambaram Dares PM Modi to Release White Paper on Economy Under UPA

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram has challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to put out a white paper on the state of the economy under the previous UPA regime, a week after the PM told CNN-News18 that he considered the option but desisted doing it because it would have damaged the perception about India’s prospects.“This government’s own documents show a high rate of growth before it took over. How can an economy that was growing at 6.6% be termed in shambles? Someone who briefed PM Modi has been economical with the truth.” Chidambaram told CNN-News18 in an exclusive interview.“My path of fiscal consolidation is being faithfully followed by my successor,” Chidamabaram said indicating that the Modi regime that came to power on promise of change was essentially following the policies of the UPA dispensation. In an exclusive interview to CNN-News18 broadcast last Friday, the PM had said: “Today I think, before presenting the first Budget, I should have placed a White Paper in Parliament on the economic situation in the country. This thought had come to me. I had two paths. Politics told me that I should put out all the details. But the nation's interest told me that this information would increase the hopelessness. The markets would have been badly hit. It would have been a big blow to the economy and the world's view of India would have got worse. It would have been very difficult to get the economy out of that.” ........Read more
