To bring empty IPL stands alive in UAE, engineers in a Mumbai studio cut-paste audio from archives

The IPL that you see is being played in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. But what about the IPL that you hear? With teams playing in front of empty stands due to Covid curbs, the answer lies 2,000 km away from the UAE, where a “sound bank” compiled in a Mumbai studio has recreated the mood and buzz of a throbbing stadium — be it the Wankhede in Mumbai, Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru or Chepauk in Chennai. Getting this right, says the broadcaster, involved three months of preparation and research. “We went back and studied the sounds of over 100 IPL matches starting from 2018. We studied the sounds associated with a specific team, and also the team they are playing against. For example, if Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are playing, the decibel level is very different from a game between Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Capitals,” says Star India’s head (Sports) Sanjog Gupta. “We had to arrive at a framework of sound that is unique to every player and every team. When M S Dhoni, or hits a six, the cheer is different compared to a player who is unknown or an upcoming youngster,” says Gupta.........Read more

‘Highly Infectious’ Swine Flu Found in China has Pandemic Potential, Causes More Serious Symptoms

Researchers in China have discovered a new type of swine flu that is capable of triggering a pandemic, according to a study published Monday in the US science journal PNAS. Named G4, it is genetically descended from the H1N1 strain that caused a pandemic in 2009. It possesses "all the essential hallmarks of being highly adapted to infect humans," say the authors, scientists at Chinese universities and China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention. From 2011 to 2018, researchers took 30,000 nasal swabs from pigs in slaughterhouses in 10 Chinese provinces and in a veterinary hospital, allowing them to isolate 179 swine flu viruses. The majority were of a new kind which has been dominant among pigs since 2016. ........Read more

Changing Dynamics: Rather Than Uniting Against BJP, Why are Congress, BSP Eager to Settle Scores?

With less than two years to go for the electoral battle of Uttar Pradesh, the political landscape is witnessing an ever-increasing war of words between Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati and Congress general secretary in charge of the state Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The latest episode was the attack and counterattack between the two over the India-China border conflict. So why is this the case? Why is Mayawati seemingly sharper in her attack on the Congress than the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in power both in the state as well as the Centre? Why do the two parties in opposition seem eager to settle scores, rather than joining in their criticism against the BJP? The answers lie in the political realities on the ground, shifting caste loyalties and desperation to protect the social electoral base or else recapture the lost one. ........Read more

What makes arteries age? Study explores new link to gut bacteria, diet

The study, published this month in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, also suggests that people may be able to prevent or even reverse such age-related decline via dietary changes and targeted therapies, like novel nutritional supplements. "Our work shows for the first time that not only is this compound directly impairing artery function, it may also help explain the damage to the cardiovascular system that naturally occurs with age," said first author Vienna Brunt, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Integrative Physiology. Eat a slab of steak or a plate of scrambled eggs, and your resident gut bacteria get to work immediately to break it down. As they metabolize the amino acids L-carnitine and choline, they churn out a metabolic byproduct called trimethylamine, which the liver converts to trimethylamine-N-Oxide (TMAO) and sends coursing through your bloodstream. ........Read more

Covid-19 lockdown cleared up the air, but harmful ozone levels increased. Here’s why

Doctors, who have put her on a high dose of steroids, immunosuppressant drug tocilizumab and immunoglobulins, believe she got coronavirus from her father, who had tested positive last week. China passes controversial Hong Kong security law

China has passed a controversial security law giving it new powers over Hong Kong, deepening fears for the city's freedoms, the BBC has learned. Last month China stunned the city when it said it would criminalise any act of secession, subversion, terrorism or collusion with foreign forces. The move came after angry protests last year - sparked by another law - which became a pro-democracy movement. Critics say this new law poses an even greater threat to Hong Kong's identity. They warn it will undermine Hong Kong's judicial independence and destroy the city's unique freedoms, not seen on mainland China. A draft of the law was not made public before it was pushed through, which means people in the city will not have seen details of the measures they now have to abide by. ........Read more
