Trade war goes digital: countries eye tariffs on Internet economy

A 20-year global moratorium on imposing tariffs on digital trade could end next week if India or South Africa makes good on threats, according to trade officials and documents, potentially forcing people to pay duties on software and movie downloads. Since 1998, World Trade Organization (WTO) members have renewed a ban on import duties on so-called “electronic transmissions”, worth up to $255 billion a year by one estimate. Some think this favours rich countries, given it received strong backing from Washington at the outset and most of the lost customs revenues are thought to be born by developing countries. ........Read more

India vs South Africa: KL Rahul dropped, Shubman Gill included as India announce 15-member squad for Test series

Shubman Gill received a maiden call-up to the Test squad as India’s selectors announced a 15-member squad to take on South Africa in the upcoming Test series. After struggling to hit his stride, KL Rahul got the axe, which could well mean Rohit Sharma gets bumped up the order to open the innings. Also, Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari made solid impression which leaves the team management to choose between Gill and Rohit as Mayank Agarwal’s opening partner. Chief selector confirmed after announcing the squad that Rohit would indeed open the innings. “Want to give Rohit Sharma an opportunity to open the innings in Tests,”Prasad said after announcing the squad. Virat Kohli (Capt), Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk),Wriddhiman Saha (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Shubman Gill........Read more

How low-paid Microsoft contractors train Cortana by listening to you

Not only does Microsoft have human contractors listen to some of your Skype and Cortana voice recordings, those contractors are paid poorly and given repetitive tasks, according to a report by Motherboard. And thanks to this new report, we now have an idea of what those contractors actually do with the Cortana recordings they listen to. Motherboard says contractors earning merely $12–$14 an hour are expected to transcribe and classify Cortana voice commands into more than two dozen topic areas, including gaming, email, communication, events, home automation, and media control. These transcribed recordings are used to help teach the Cortana assistant to better understand speech. Contractors are expected to work through a grueling 200 classification tasks an hour — that’s three a minute, or one every 18 seconds on average. They do have the potential to earn a bonus of an additional $1 an hour, according to contracts shared with Motherboard.........Read more

'Article 15' Maker Appeals For Help As Movie On Caste System Faces Blocks

Article 15, a movie on caste discrimination, was released on Friday, a movie about the caste system in India has run into protests a day after its release, forcing it off theatres in some parts of the country, the film's director-producer has said, opening a fresh frontier in a nationwide debate over free speech. Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha has appealed for help as tensions and protests rise in various cities. Disruptive mobs are protesting against the film outside cinema halls claiming that the movie portrays the so-called upper caste Brahmin community in bad light. An organisation called the Brahmin Samaj of India had petitioned the Supreme Court to stop the film's release. The Ayushmann Khurana-starrer was then shown to many organisations, including the Karni Sena, who then issued statements that they have nothing against the movie, Mr Sinha said. Karni Sena had earlier protested against Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film 'Padmaavat' saying it defamed a queen from the Rajput community. Yet, the director says, protests continue in many cities. Mobs are forcing cinema hall owners to stop the screening of the movie in cities like Patna, Roorkee, Aligarh and Kanpur. The director says he has tried to reach out to the local administration for help but to no avail.........Read more
